The settlement of people and European cultures from the XV century in the Canary Islands after the conquest and the American influences, create in the popular art a “Typical Canary Craft“.

The clasic trades of the conquistadors, their owns traditions, in a context so precarious as our islands where the prime material was scarce or null, configures a craft very specific. Possibly the climatic influence and the functionality, devoid of every type of ostentation and the destiny principally rural, marks the charactistics of the canary craft.

Canarian birth of its own style with strength and native purity. Are the wifes or daughters of wood craftsmens, sharescroppers or servants who perform this work. The draft art currently debelops, like embroidery, in private homes  alternating with housework, passing of teachings from grandmother to mother or daugthers. Perhaps, this origin without influences of consumption has maintained the draft in its original style and purity until today.

The canary draft, born and raised in the Canary Island, essentially, with its own style and with variations depending on the area in which it is performed. They are struggling places, for its precious style hard to match in the rest of the archipelago; the north of tenerife, as Icod, Garachico, Buenavista, SAn Juan de la Rambla, La Guancha, Los Realejos, La Vicotria and La Orotava.

The canary draft has crossed the “fives seas” as we can also find canaris migrants in their capacity as islanders, anywhere in the world. In some places the settlement have taken with them to transfer its customs, will continue with their own works and thus will export their handicrafts. Today there toiling and famous centers in creating canary draft beyond our borders.

In few paces we can find a combination so complete as in La Casa del os Balcones, to admire daily craftsman/craftswoman doing their work and prepared to answer the most varied questions about their work.

The House of Balconies is still the most important handicraft complez of Canary drafts. It is the birthpace of traditional dress par excellence of Tenerife, the typical costume (Traje de Mago) of La Orotava.

The masters craftmen continue faithfully developing many tasks originating from our ancestors:”pieces and unique objects” that are still part of it and getting closer to our so distant and illustrious history of craft in the Canary Islands.
